Exhibition of Cuban Books & Prints

A while back I did a couple of posts on handprinted books I picked up on a trip to Cuba. (You can see the posts here and here.)

Recently the Gallery at Zea Mays Printmaking in Florence, Massachusetts, did an exhibition of Cuban books and Prints. If you'd like to see more, check out this link for some photos from the exhibition. Wonderful stuff, especially when you consider the conditions in which the artists are doing their work (well, they do have rum and cigars, which maybe is all you need to get inspired :)

hi...I am a multi media artist living in North Bay, Ontario, Canada and in Havana, Cuba....working in my studio and at the Taller de Grafica Experimental...it is interesting to note that despite the "blockade" cultural, scientific and sports exchanges are alive and well...not only that.. students from the USofA receive a pass for $20.00 (CUC) that allows them free medicare!!!....we have had 7 exchanges with Cuban artists since 1999....one a 3 year project with 25 Cuban and 25 Canadian artists which went to 6 Cuban cities and 6 Canadian centres

Thanks for your comment, David. I wonder if any articles have been written about these exchanges. It would be really interesting to read more about the artists' experiences.

I will dig this information up for you. The 3 year project, "Dos Naciones: Obras Sobre Papel" consisted of 25 Canadian and 25 Cuban artists and ran from 2000 to 2003. It was organized by the White Water Gallery in North Bay and by the Centro de Desarrollo de las Artes Visuales in Habana Vieja, Niurka Mejias and myself were the curators. The latest exhibition was held in 2006 at the WKP Kennedy Gallery in North Bay and was called "From Propaganda to Design" featuring Santos Toledo Argudin. Santos is one of Cuba's foremost graphic designers. Santos and this exhibition were recently featured on Cuban National Television and in Granma Internacional. From Saturday October 4 ( the opening festivities) to November 1 the WKP Kennedy Gallery in North Bay will exhibit "Parejas" (Couples) a multi-media exhibition consisting of printmaking, painting, sculpture, installation art and video. The artists include Nancy Davies, Janette Brossard, Norberto Marrero and myself. Of interest to you is that Norberto was the principal specialist at the Taller Experimental de Grafica de la Habana from 2000 to 2006.
